What is a Electric Fence Energizer ?

An Electric Fence Energizer is a device that converts direct current or alternating current into pulses of high voltage. As power sources, either mains electricity or batteries can be used. Solar Energizers run the power source from batteries that are charged via solar.

The power output of an Electric Fence Energizer is measured in Joules. This is what gives the shock to anything that comes in contact with a live line when an energizer is armed. A Cyclic Wave-shaped energizer ensures that maximum power is always maintained at the fence line. It works similarly to flushing a toilet. The water flows into the storage tank (capacitor), and when the valve is opened, all the water rushes out at once.

Energizer for an Electric Fence?

Well-known brands of Electric Fence Energizers in South Africa like Nemtek and Stafix offer reliable protection and are SANS approved, offer a 2 year warranty and excellent customer service.

  • One that is certified to International Standards of Compliance
  • Modular construction for ease of service
  • That there is back-up service and spare parts are available.

Solar Energizers

Solar Energizers from leading brands like Nemtek and JVA are available from We Do Security.

Due to the continuous load shedding in South Africa, solar energizers are becoming an essential. In addition, they are very useful in large estates, commercial properties, and farms. Rotational grazing is made easier and more affordable with these Energizers since they can be easily moved from one location to another.

For remote areas without ESKOM power or where battery maintenance is difficult, a solar-powered electric fence energizer is ideal. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which is then used to charge the batteries that power the energizer.

Price of Energizers

Choosing a Electric Fence Energizer can also be difficult to determine since different manufacturers use different criteria to advertise their energizers’ capabilities. Comparing claims from different manufacturers must be done with great care so that you are comparing apples to apples.

Things to look for

  • Do the units comply with the latest legislation
  • Voltage output -especially under different loads
  • Joule Rating -Stored or output joules?
  • Output Amperage
  • Pulse Shape – Pulse behaviour

The right voltage can mean a good fence line, not necessarily a powerful energizer. Under load, the energizer can lose its power. An electric fence energizer’s joule rating is a more reliable indicator of its capabilities.

Energizer Repairs

Stafix and Nemtek provide 2-year product warranties as well as quick response times for repairs. You can usually expect a turnaround time of one day

There are as many variations within one brand as there are between the many options available.

  • Power source – Is mains power available? If not, you will have to use a battery-powered unit, possibly with solar panel backup.
  • Length and type of fence line to be powered – The longer the fence line, the bigger the energizer.
  • The type of animal to be controlled – Sheep require more power to control them than cattle (insulation of the wool).
  • Wildlife also should be controlled using bigger energizers.
  • Likely competition from vegetation that can cause a strain on the smaller energizers

Size of Energizer

As a general rule, one joule of output energy can power up to 10 km of fence wire. It will also depend on the type of material (galvanized, aluminium, stainless steel). Materials such as aluminium, galvanized steel, and stainless steel have different levels of conductivity.

When designing an Electric Fence, the advantages and disadvantages of each material must be considered when designing a fence. You have to take into account the length and type of wire and cable of the fence before choosing the right energizer.

The distance can power will depend on a number of factors

  • The quality of the earthing (number, type, size and condition of spikes)
  • The quality of the insulators used (porcelain, plastic)
  • Impedance that can be caused by poor insulators
  • The type of wire used I resistance (galvanized , stainless steel, copper…)
  • The diameter of the wire used
  •  The wiring configuration (parallel vs. series /resistance)
  • Soil type, and condition of the soil (mineral content, moist or dry)
  • Atmospheric conditions
  • Competition from vegetation (fence hygiene)
  • Bad connections. (line clamps)
