If you have to choose between a wired and a wireless solution like wifi cameras, you should know all the pros and cons of both. There’s a lot of confusion around these two types of cameras, and we’re here to explain everything.
The growing popularity of wireless security cameras has to do with their ease of installation and the ease with which they can be viewed using a computer or smartphone.
A wireless security camera, or WiFi camera, transmits and receives video over WiFi. It requires power to operate, so it can’t truly be a wire-free camera.
So why is it called a wireless camera? Just because it uses wireless technology.
WIRE-FREE CAMERAS
When a wireless camera is powered by a battery, it becomes a wire-free camera.
- Wired camera: connected to a power source and the internet by a cable
- Wireless: connected to the internet over Wi-Fi, connected to a power source by a cable
- Wire-free: wireless cameras connected to the internet over Wi-Fi and powered by batteries
How does a WIFI camera work
Wireless security cameras store their footage on a cloud server or on local media, such as a micro SD card inside the camera. They generally record when motion or sound is detected, but some can be set to record continuously.
If equipped with night vision, the cameras can record at night and capture high-quality video. In addition, they usually feature two-way audio capabilities so you can speak to the person seen by the camera.

Wireless Cameras
- Simplicity of installing wifi cameras make them ideal for non permanent solutions
- Low maintenance as less to go wrong like cables and connections.
- Wifi cameras are more flexible in terms of mounting locations
- The greatest disadvantage of wireless security cameras is that they are susceptible to interference, which makes them less reliable in some situations.
- The only limitation when it comes to mounting a wireless camera is access to a power source.
- WiFi Cameras are limited in the size of the video
- When choosing a wired or wireless security camera system, its size and number are two of the primary factors.
Wired Cameras
- There are two choices for powering a wired security system, a separate power cord or one Power Over Ethernet cable. POE, or Power Over Ethernet, systems require only one cable that supplies both power and data.
- The main advantage of wired security is its reliability. Wired security systems are not susceptible to interference from wireless signals since the cameras, recorders, and router are physically connected.
- A big drawback of a wired system is the installation process
- The installation time of wired security cameras makes them more suitable for homes and businesses with permanent locations.
- Wired systems are less flexible because they will require re-running cables if you want to move the cameras.
Do you need Internet for Wi-Fi cameras?
Although not all wireless cameras require the internet, the vast majority of them do, so we recommend using a camera that’s connected to the Internet.
Wireless WiFI cameras can record their video footage to microSD cards so that it can be retrieved later, however if you want the functionality of viewing offsite you will need internet connection
